First CUSO-VSO/B.C. Civil Service partnership volunteer selected

CUSO-VSO has a partnership with the Province of British Columbia that encourages employees to take a "sabatical" and then return to serve with the Province of B.C. Over thirty BC civil servants have served with CUSO or VSO prior to their employment or during their employment (after which they had to reapply for a job.) Under the current agreement, a position is guaranteed for them on return from an overseas posting.

Poverty and Promise: One Volunteer's Experience of Kenya (Just One Voice Press) by Cindi Brown has won the Indie Gold Medal Award from the 2009 Indie Next Generation Book Awards program and the IPPY Gold Medal Award from the 2009 Independent Publisher Book Awards program, both in the Multicultural category.

CUSO pioneer awarded posthumous honour

The Canadian National Council of Visible Minorities for the Federal Public Service plans to present a posthumous award to Dr. Lewis Perinbam. Mr. Lewis Perinbam died on December 12th, 2007, after a long illness. Mr. Perinbam was one of Canada’s pioneers in international development and volunteering, and closely associated with CUSO.

Dr. James Morrison, a history professor at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and former overseas volunteer with CUSO, has been named a Member of the Order of Canada by Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada. Dr. Morrison was a volunteer in West Africa in the late 1960s.
