Health experts in Nigeria are stressing the need to find a long-term cure for HIV in the form of a reliable vaccine.
Vanguard reports that Professor Fifelis Njokanma, speaking at the third Symposium of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research Institutional- Review Board, believes that HIV vaccines could play an important role in improving the general health of the country.
He stressed that it was vital that medical researchers ensure that such vaccines are developed in an ethical way with the right steps taken to prevent harm to trial participants. Professor Njokanma also believes that enough safeguards exist to ensure the development of vaccines for malaria and HIV without comprising researchers.
Last week, the Daily Trust reported that the Institute of Human Virology believes that the number of people living with HIV in Nigeria could total nearly five million, with many not receiving the appropriate counselling or correct drug treatment.
