Bosnia facing 'civil war threat'
20/10/2009
Concerns have been raised that suggest Bosnia could be facing a major crisis as the country's political system remains unstable.
The Daily Telegraph reports that a number of Bosnian Serb leaders are showing increasing support for independence following the ongoing constitutional crisis in the Balkan region.
Both US and European officials are hoping that an emergency meeting to be held this week will be able to prevent or delay the immediate threat of civil war.
Sulejman Tihic, the leader of Bosnia's main Bosnian Muslim party, believes that steps need to be taken quickly to avert any possible conflict and a repeat of the three-year war in the 1990s.
"If it continues to go on like this, there is no question there will be conflict. It's just a question of what kind of conflict there will be and is it going to be in three months, six months or one year?" he added.
The United Nations war crimes tribunal for the 1990s Balkan conflict is set to begin the trial of the ex-Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic before the end of October after his latest appeal was rejected.
