Football to raise HIV awareness in Zimbabwe

13/11/2009

It is hoped an initiative could help to increase the understanding of HIV in Zimbabwe.

A new documentary will follow a women's football team made up of players living with HIV, reports Global Health TV.

The Positive Ladies Soccer Club will focus on tackling some of the stigma associated with the disease and could help to highlight a number of key issues.

Janet Mpalume, one of the women taking part in the project, explained: "Playing soccer makes me feel like I am somebody. Somebody who is seen amongst others. Now people can see that I am here."

World Health Organisation figures estimate that around 1.3 million people are living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

While, UNAIDS research suggests that the number of adults and children living with advanced HIV infection receiving antiretrovirals in Zimbabwe is currently below the global average of 31 per cent.
