Fire 'leaves around 2,000 people homeless' in Cambodia

24/11/2009

A fire that swept through a village in Phnom Penh's Russei Keo district last week has left around 2,000 people without a roof over their heads, it has been reported.

Overall, 243 houses were damaged by the flames, leaving people in the area homeless and vulnerable to disease, informs the Phnom Penh Post.

Head of the Chraing Chamres commune Chief Van Thorn is quoted by the news provider as saying that an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Neth Sophana, director of disaster management for the Cambodian Red Cross, is also quoted as saying that families are set to receive blankets, mosquito nets and 50 kilogrammes of rice each.

"We are appealing for more donors to help these families," the director added.

This news comes after the China Daily reported last month that festival goers travelling to Cambodia's three-day annual river celebrations were set to be warned about the dangers of swine flu and HIV, it has been reported.
