Tanzania 'to receive more aid this year'

26/11/2009

Tanzania is set to receive more aid towards its budget this year, it has revealed - funds which will be spent on improving the economy, employment market and infrastructure, its government has stated.

More than a third of all aid is spent on supporting the country's budget, Reuters informs, with 14 donors contributing 11.4 per cent of it.

Agriculture and farming is set to be an area focused upon over the next year, a meeting between officials, donors and civil society groups ascertained recently.

The injection of funds comes despite the group ruling that the country has done little to tackle corruption, improve its environmental priorities or tackle poverty, the news agency reports.

It quotes the country's finance Minister Mustafa Mkulo as stating: "The major issue raised was that the investment climate in the private sector needed to be significantly strengthened, in order to increase growth and job creation."

This news follows comments made by businessman Gunwat Sachdev in the Arusha Times in September that Maasai communities may be denying children access to education due to their focus on traditional practices.
