Sri Lankan voting unrest 'results in death'
12/01/2010
One person has been killed in the violence that has surrounded the opening of Sri Lanka's polling stations this week, it has been reported.
An attack was launched on supporters of the opposition leader Sarath Fonseka as they rallied in the current president Mahinda Rajapaksa's home town on Tuesday January 11th.
So far, a total of 251 violent incidents have been reported in relation to the elections, according to Reuters, as Mr Fonseka, who led the defeat of the Tamil Tigers rebel group, challenges Mr Rajapaksa's post.
The news provider stated that People's Action for Free and Fair Elections - a monitoring group - has confirmed the death and said that seven other people have been injured as a result of the violence.
This news comes after the agency reported that election monitors believe the procedures put in place to ensure Tamils in refugee camps can register to vote are inefficient.
