Lack of education opportunities in Nepal 'pushes women into prostitution'
14/01/2010
Women from poor communities in Nepal resort to prostitution in order to survive, it has been reported, something that has been a last resort for many females in the country for generations.
Although they may harbour other ambitions, a lack of access to education means that many of them are unable to follow the career paths they wish to, informs AFP.
This is a particular problem for females in the Badi caste, who are mainly centred around west Nepal.
Sapana Pradhan Malla, a women's rights lawyer who joined Nepal's parliament last year, told the news agency: "Because of the social stigma they have not been a political priority. I urge the government to ensure justice for these people."
A report compiled by the UN in 2008 concluded that girls' education in Nepal is being adversely affected by a shortage of female teachers, inadequate training and a lack of concern about gender equality.
