Education system 'responsible for Pakistan terrorism'
22/01/2010
Pakistan's education system is one of the major factors responsible for the breeding of terrorists in the country, it has been claimed.
According to the Washington Post, the country's curriculum glorifies violence in the name of Islam - something that has become a major hindrance to the efforts of US and other international forces present in the nation.
Representatives for Western nations often cite the education provided by Islamic institutions as "feeders" for terrorist groups and the fact that many adults are illiterate does not help the problem, the publication added.
Funding from the US in the future may help to change this situation, making access to alternative education more widely available in the country.
However, this will not be an easy transition, the publication suggested.
It quotes Khadim Hussain, coordinator of the Aryana Institute for Regional Research and Advocacy as stating: "If the people get education, the elite would be threatened. If they make education available, the security establishment's ideology may be at risk."
In related news, last month Katie Donohoe, deputy director of education for the US Agency for International Development, said that ensuring Pakistan has talented teachers with high standards will be of great benefit to its education system.
