UN Aid official meets Nigerian acting president to discuss HIV and AIDS
23/02/2010
Nigeria's HIV and AIDS pandemic is to be discussed by acting president Dr Goodluck Jonathan and the US Global AIDS coordinator Eric Goosby.
They are joined by the executive director of the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV and AIDS, Michel Sidibe, reports Afrique en ligne.
The Nigerian government is particularly worried about mother to child transference of the disease and wishes to collate the correct data and statistics regarding the virus in order to develop a plan of action.
Mr Sidibe has previously suggested African countries should contribute more towards the battle against HIV and AIDS - noting that the majority of aid comes from overseas - and said that the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa could provide an opportunity for the continent to rally further support for their cause.
Only last month did the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, slam the poor quality of life in Nigeria during a state department meeting.
