'Many live in slums' in Ghana
04/05/2010
Around one-third of residents in Ghana's capital city of Accra live in slums, it has been announced.
Nathaniel Adzotor, the sub metro director of Okaikoi South, said that these people do not enjoy adequate social services as a result, allAfrica.com reports.
Mr Adzotor made the revelations during a statement that he read at a ceremony to kick off the Community Water and Sanitation Boards for Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene programme this week.
He explained that it is difficult for services to be properly mapped and delivered in these regions because of the poor layout and informal nature of the settlements.
The scheme will be rolled out in three communities in Accra and two in Takoradi "where water, sanitation, hygiene and related health problems are particularly severe", he added.
It was recently reported that police officers and security personnel in Ghana are cracking down on Fulani herdsmen, who they have accused of a number of crimes that include armed robbery and rape.
