Ugandan power output doubles

25/05/2010

Uganda has nearly doubled its power output in the last five years, which could make the country's economy more competitive.

It is attempting to satisfy increasing demand that is "driven by robust economic growth", according to the New Vision.

Frank Sebbowa, of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, explained: "Investments in the sector have increased, attracting local and international players because there is transparency."

The increase has come as a result of a concerted effort to elevate power supply, with new plants installed at Tororo, Namanve and Mutundwe in Kampala, as well as a hydro-power complex at Jinja.

It has not only been aimed at enabling the desired pace of economic improvement to take place, but also to try to get electricity to reach every part of the country, the portal stated.

Recent reports revealed the US Congress has passed legislation to allow the capture of the leadership of the Lord's Revolutionary Army in Uganda to protect the nation's civilian population.
