Ugandan LRA blocking access to displaced persons

27/05/2010

The Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and other armed militias are preventing aid from reaching displaced persons.

Aid workers cannot get access to the thousands of individuals that have had to leave their homes in the Central African Republic (CAR), Irin News reports.

Jean Sebastien Munie, head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in the CAR, told the news provider: "The main humanitarian challenges relate to civilian protection and humanitarian access."

"There are pockets of conflict," he explained.

The official confirmed that there are now around 180,000 internally displaced persons in the country as at least 20,000 have left their properties in the northern and south-western regions since January this year.

Around 12,000 people have been displaced in the last six weeks due to LRA attacks, he added.

It was recently revealed that power output in Uganda has doubled in the last five years, which could make the nation's economy more competitive.
