Ugandans attempt to make use of waste

14/06/2010

Individuals in Uganda are attempting to use their waste more productively.

Mineral water bottles are being utilised as building blocks at Bwetyaba in Kayunga district, the New Vision reports.

The founder of Butakoola Village Association Stephen Ssemutumba revealed the first bottle-brick structure to have been built is a toilet at Bwetyaba Primary School.

Pupils at the learning institute have been encouraged to collect empty cartons and put them to good use after a survey found farmers in the area were complaining of poorly disposed of products.

"As a result, the association came up with the idea of profitability preserving the environment by reusing water bottles," Mr Ssemutumba explained.

He added the bottle-brick method was first tested in the US around nine years ago and is an effective way to preserve the environment.

Yoweri Museveni, Uganda's president, recently observed the country's economy is on the increase and is now big enough to largely sustain itself.
