Kenyan referendum talks to resume
18/06/2010
Talks are set to resume between the Kenyan government and church leaders over the country's proposed constitution.
Vice-president Kalonzo Musyoka announced Uhuru Kenyatta and Charity Ngilu will be representing the government in the debates, the Daily Nation reports.
It follows a funeral service that has been held for victims of the Uhuru Park explosions, where six people were killed and 104 others injured as the disagreement over the referendum boiled over.
Mr Musyoka stated the government and the church must discuss the situation in order for it to improve.
He said: "We must understand that after the referendum, there is going to be Kenya. Therefore, we continue to urge for reconciliation and unity."
The politician appealed for calm ahead of the proposed meetings.
When the blasts at Uhuru Park in Nairobi went off, frightened residents - who were campaigning on the side of the church in opposition to the constitution - ran for cover and caused a stampede.
