South Africans urged to "fight abuse"

21/07/2010

Both men and women in South Africa have been urged to fight against abuse against women during an international summit in Johannesburg.

All Africa reported that the week-long event saw "speaker after speaker" use their time on the podium to encourage those attending to make sure they speak out and fight against the horrendous violence which is being seen against women in the country.

The talks were attended by more than 100 delegates from 25 countries and were held at the University of Johannesburg.

Karen Robinson, managing director of anti-violence and youth education group Man Up, said: "From domestic violence to trafficking to rape as a tool of war ... We have many delegates that have come from really horrific backgrounds and they have experienced first-hand what violence against women and children is like in a conflict zone."

As well as problems with violence against women, xenophobic and racist attacks on both whites and blacks living in the country is an ongoing issue.
