AIDS conference reveals new challenges in fight against illness

23/07/2010

An international AIDS conference in Vienna, Austria, has highlighted the ongoing struggle against AIDS around the world and flagged up new challenges in the fight against the illness.

One of the main problems discussed at the six-day event is the lack of funding for global AIDS efforts, which is worsened by the financial problems being faced by the governments of many nations.

Despite this, richer countries were still urged to give more to help research ahead of a meeting of donors this October. The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria needs some $20 billion (£12.9 billion) to carry out its work over the next three years but much of that cash is so far unaccounted for.

Xinhua noted that one country set to be worst hit by a lack of AIDS funding is Kenya. According to the source, 70 per cent of the nation's AIDS prevention programs and treatment schemes rely on international aid.
