'More action needed' on Papua New Guinea poverty
28/07/2010
More steps need to be taken to tackle poverty levels in the Pacific country of Papua New Guinea, it has been said.
According to news source Fiji Village, "extra efforts" are needed if the island and other Pacific regions are to come out of poverty. Resident coordinator for UN System operational activities Knut Ostby said that more needs to be done to tackle the problem in Papua New Guinea as well as Fiji.
He was talking at the opening of the Reporting on the Millennium Development Goals as National Issues workshop held in Suva earlier this week.
According to Mr Ostby, poverty is a growing problem for many on the islands and should a goal of reducing poverty by 2015 be reached, efforts need to be stepped up.
AusAid noted that while Papua New Guinea "does not exhibit the widespread abject poverty present in some developing countries," poverty is still a serious issue for the nation.
